Working with National Sample Survey (NSS) data in Stata | Emmanuel Teitelbaum

In recent years, India’s Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has been releasing micro-data for some of the large-scale sample surveys conducted by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO). This is kind of cool because, in the past, if you wanted to work with NSS unit-level data you had to purchase it.

Hey Emmanuel, thanks for this in-depth information - it's very helpful. As I am waiting for my data request to pass through, I had a question about the NSS data.

Given my research topic, could you let me know if the there are any indicators for Violence/Crimes against women in the district/state level census data?

Thank you in advance, Rishi

Hi Rishi Nss data does not have any such variables/information. However, such inform is available in dhs/nfhs data.

Hi, Suppose I have multiple rounds of NSS, say 64th 66th and 68th. I have merged the different blocks for each round separately. I then intend to append them. So I presume I should use the multiper_combined as pw ? so should I set svyset after I append all the rounds. or should I do it for each round first and then append it.

Hi Emmanuel, Thank you for this detailed info. Quite helpful. I need some help now. i am struggling to open the data on my dell laptop. When i download nesstar, I have a lot of errors and opening the data becomes a problem. Could you please help. thank you in advance.

Hi Emmanuel, I am also using NSS , so am using round 66, so I could merge all the blocks, except block 9 which has consumer expenditure, can you help me how to overcome that?

mullickanushka commented 1 year ago

Hi Yakira07 how did you merge block 9 with all other blocks?

Hello Emmanuel, This was really helpful, thank you. I am working with EUS 2011-12 on SPSS. But I am a little confused about how to apply weights for the columns I am interested in. In Block 5.1, I want to generate cross tables for Usual Principal Activity Sector and Availability of Social Security. In that case, how do I decide which multiplier to apply?
