MCP73811/2 would be a cheaper alternative to the MAX1551/MAX1555

Great, MCP73811/2 seems to fit well. But this issue concerns the 4xAA charging, not the LiPo charging.

I'd ditch the 4xAA battery for the 3W LED and rather use the logic power supply, with a larger LiPo cell of course. No need for a separate charger then.
