Interface strings should be localizable #114

Closed ghost closed 12 years ago

ghost commented 13 years ago

Congrats for this beautiful piece of software and the recent release!

Sorry if I am talking nonsense because I am no coder, i just would like to know if it could be possible to isolate/extract the interface strings in one single file so that it could be easily translatable.

Thansk in advance for any answer

Pita commented 13 years ago

Yes thats possible, maybe in 1.1. Is translation so important for you?

ghost commented 13 years ago

@Pita thanks for positive and ultraspeed answer :) Yes translation is definitely important. etherpad-lite can easily reach a worldwide audience it deserves but English is not the only spoken language on the globe :)

Pita commented 13 years ago

I thought about it, shouldn't be to diffcult. But we're aggregating ideas at the moment before we continuing development

Pita commented 13 years ago

I will give that a try tomorrow. In which languages you want to translate too?

ghost commented 13 years ago

Every :) well French to begin with. The idea is to pass the word to the multilingual community we have on babelzilla.org and ask for volunteers to provide their own lang file.

Pita commented 13 years ago

I added basic support for the pad. Checkout the develop branch and tell me if you can work with that. I made a quick and dirty translation for german too. It's not complete of course, I just wanna now if this is the right way of how to do that

ghost commented 13 years ago

WOW, this is great and we have been testing it here http://clochix.net:9001/p/test with success - tooltips are in French using this file http://www.wuala.com/goofy_frenchmoz/Public/fr-pad.json/

that you are welcome to commit in your github thing. please let me know as soon as you have a more complete JSON lang file (covering all interface strings if possible) and I will request for translations on http://www.babelzilla.org

Thanks very much, keep rolling!

Pita commented 13 years ago

I think the translation framework is pretty much complete now. I think we should do the languages french, spanish, arabic. We shouldn't do more cause we're still changing the interface very fast, maybe later.

Tell me if you run into problems while translating

ghost commented 13 years ago

The invitation to provide translations has been made here http://www.babelzilla.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=6907&hl=

Note that a user has spotted a tiny typo in the English interface http://www.babelzilla.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=6907&view=findpost&p=60743

Pita commented 13 years ago

@goofy-bz The typo is no problem for the translation, just ignore it, I will fix that later. Anyway I can't find any translated files there...

hello :) at least here is one available here http://www.babelzilla.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=6907&view=findpost&p=60916

cheers

@Pita What is the current state of this?

Pita commented 13 years ago

Status is that there is a working implementation in the develop branch. But only with two languages, a east european language and german... we need translators for this

Pita commented 13 years ago

Pulling the commits out of the develop branch is a pain... Will do this another day

Pita commented 12 years ago

I think this won't make it to 1.1, we should do this later

JohnMcLear commented 12 years ago

Knocked back to 1.2

rassie commented 12 years ago

Is there any change on this one? It seems, some translation bits landed on develop and have been thrown out again.

JohnMcLear commented 12 years ago

Afaik it's due in 1.2

@pita did some work on it but it's been a really low priority.

Is 1.2 the version after the yet-to-be-released develop-merging 1.1? Or will develop become 1.2 later?

JohnMcLear commented 12 years ago

1.2 is after develop so it's a while away but feel free to begin writing a plan or framework for how you want to see it integrated or even to look at how it was carved in before..

Ideally it would be a plugin.. IMHO

Hi dev team, what is the current status of this issue? It seems there has been some way to push i18n for .html files and thus allow easy translation one year ago, but now it is no longer available(?) The French community of free software I belong to is currently testing etherpad lite on its own server, using it as collaborative platform. Of course we could translate hardcoded strings, but it is a rather dirty solution, we would much prefer having one separated en-US file (JSON or properties or whatever) as a basis for all translations. At this point of development, main interface is probably stable now, and if extracted strings are maintained in a dictinct file, it is no huge job to update translations if necessary. Please consider etherpad lite is not just a toy for geeks who are supposed to be fluent in English, but should be developed as an universal tool. Thanks for any effort in that direction.

ghost commented 12 years ago

Side suggestion: here is a smart process to localize strings in html files (used on B2G/Firefox OS to come) https://github.com/fabi1cazenave/webL10n pehaps this same kind of trick could be used for etherpad lite?

JohnMcLear commented 12 years ago

We use a templating system so in theory this should be relatively painless/easy to integrate. I don't believe anyone is currently pro-actively working on this though. We'd welcome forks/contributions/discussions as to the best way forward.
