ethminer.exe disappears #2160

Most likely your antivirus program has tested the executable file as malicious and has silently removed it. Check you AV log or settings and exclude ethminer.exe from scanning as the file is safe (even though the AV recognizes it as mining tool)

Whitelist the directory / binary in your AV solution.

my confidence in this application being able to do something useful has disappeared as well.

Executable was obviously blocked and quarantined by Windows Defender. Check your Windows notifications, you'll be directed to the control panel, where you can whitelist Ethminer.
