Compiling with MinGW #29

In-progress work for issue #28.

Thanks for the comments. I am aware that my changes break stuff. In some of the commit messages I also note that I am not convinced that these are right fixes. On the other hand, I am not sure it is worthwhile to spend the time to fix this for MinGW, especially if I am the only one who uses it anyway.
