I wouldn't call this maintaing really since the last commit to the repo was about 3-4 years ago? I don't think any of us who built the repo is actually using Gentoo at the moment. Cool that it worked for that long, we never got around to delete the repo in case someone was using something. Maybe we will just let it be.
It doesn't surprise me if the ebuild quality was bad, I also note that it seems to be two EAPI versions "behind" since it was written.
Maybe I get around to remove it from this repo some day, but since your new ebuild is a newer version, people will end up on that new version.
