Web site teaser splash page #51

Closed pagojo closed 11 years ago

pagojo commented 11 years ago

So lets have a ticket for a splash page that need to be online in less than 24 ours :-)

As far as the splash page goes few things tht come to mind:

Neat graphics btw

  1. lets not have any links to sponsor packages yet since we're not ready for that
  2. Lets edit the text and make it more authoritative and positive
  3. Lets announce the date!
  4. do it ASAP :-)
  5. place an obvious twitter link to @EuRuKoAthens

so the text in my opinion should read like:

"The European Ruby Conference is coming to Athens this summer on the 28th and 29th of June 2013.... stay tuned"

How about that? Can someone edit the pic by tomorrow?

chief commented 11 years ago

pagojo commented 11 years ago

ouch I am useless with this CSS/HTML fluff :-( I was thinking of just posting an edited pic as it were

fotos commented 11 years ago

@pagojo relax mate. Who said it must be done in 24 hours? Take it easy and don't rush it. Pushing others like this is wrong and breaks the team spirit. Don't do it.

Do we have to make any announcements I'm not aware of in 24 hours? We have to wait the confirmation of Matz and finish the splash page. It would be cool if we are done by Wednesday. Don't invent your own timetable please.

@chief don't bite. We won't find another person at this particular moment. Don't put needless options on the table. The guys at Skroutz will do it ASAP but most likely it won't be in under 24 hours.

Guys keep this issue on topic which is: comments, ideas and a discussion about the splash page. Not any particular timetable FFS. As soon as we are done with commenting we'll see how fast we can roll the page out.

End of the story.

pagojo commented 11 years ago

@fotos FFS, to use your lingo, we said that we'd have the splash page by this passed Friday and that by Monday we'd be ready to announce dates and venue. I am not pushing, I am asking whether we can or not. I was under the impression that putting up the splash page was simple until @chief pointed out there was work to be done, which is fine.

fotos commented 11 years ago

@pagojo nothing is easy and simple. Having an easy mentality is not the way forward. Everything needs to be well thought, organised and orchestrated in order to succeed. I've said that in person as well. Demoting everything to easy status does a disservice to the people putting many hours of effort for perfect (or almost perfect) results.

Saying that something "needs to be online in less than 24 hours" (even with a smiley) is considered pushing in my playbook. Makes other people anxious and stressful for no apparent reason. That's what tripped me off as well.

Instead of making such statements how about you ask directly instead, in a more polite way:

@cheif do you believe we will have the splash page tomorrow? If not do we have a checklist of things to complete? Is there any other way to help with this goal (besides our comments)?

I find this way of communication way more appropriate and considerate. Creates less tension and focuses on the work at hand, NOT the expectations.

pagojo commented 11 years ago

@fotos I don't see why anyone would trip with my original posting, have look at it again please. I was not being assertive, I was making suggestions I asked if it could be done by tomorrow and I wasn't being rude to anyone. no 'FFS' no 'end of story', no nothing. Give it some thought

vvatikiotis commented 11 years ago

To clear things up @pagojo "I was under the impression" you use that a lot and then you start assuming things. I know it's not intentional and has no bad intent but you have to adjust. Sometimes you just sound bossy. I understand your enthusiasm and I've seen it but sometimes you have to wind down. Just reflect a bit and think of saint Bruce.

@fotos I don't know you as well as John but sometimes you are assertive when you try to resolve arguments. I feel you are doing the right thing but sometimes your written language is inappropriate. If the FFS wasn't there, this argument would have ended.

This thing shouldn't escalate. Reflect and adjust to each other's needs. We are in for the long haul.

apantsiop commented 11 years ago

My suggestions :

By the way : :+1: for the design

nikosd commented 11 years ago

@euruko2013/owners: I need some feedback to provide to Errikos,

For the venue I guess no until we have the official/final ok, but the previous two I would like your thoughts -ASAP-.

vvatikiotis commented 11 years ago

I'd say yes on both, no need to play super tight defense here. I'd say yes for the venue as well, since all these 3 issues, Matz venue date, are tight coupled.

nolamesa commented 11 years ago

If the psd is appropriate and needs no changes it is fine. But I think Matz should be presented with his photo and info which might need a few changes in the design. So lets get the site online with all that we can have in the current splash page and we iterate from there...

My view as far as the text and linkage goes has been posted at the beginning of this thread and remains the same :o)

My suggestion is that we announce Matz and dates with the splash page.

The venue is less necessary at this point for those making arrangements to attend. Plus we may wanna keep it quiet for now and use its announcement later (when the website is ready with pretty pictures on our site perhaps? ) to create more buzz. If we announce the venue now we will have everyone googling for it and we might benefit more from keeping traffic on our site instead. How does this sound?

nikosd commented 11 years ago

Ok,

point 1: I'm not blocking anything. This will go live and from then we see. point 2: We need some adjustments from the design team, so we can include the dates and optionally Matz and even more optionally the venue in the simple single splash page.

@chief : Can you forward the request to your designer team (point 2)?

btw guys @eirc has kindly created the splash page but we forgot to update him on the latest text to include

nikosd commented 11 years ago

John, I'm on it. We know that we are going to update the text as also we are going to add Google Analytics. Don't spend more time on this - I'm on it and it will be delivered today live.

@nikosd super :-)

nikosd commented 11 years ago

A first version is ready. Once @chief pushes this thing live this issue should be closed. All site related issues from now on should be opened in https://github.com/euruko2013/site and we shall have some people assigned strictly to the site without needing to ask the committee first for every single issue.

chief commented 11 years ago

Good morning everyone, our splash page is finally online! Check it out http://www.euruko2013.org Credits:

Next steps

Major issue for the committee (regarding to site) is The Content

pagojo commented 11 years ago

great ;-)

It renders a bit weirdly on Opera though

shall we tweet about it anyway?

chief commented 11 years ago

Opera? what is this? :)

why not? What do others say?

pagojo commented 11 years ago

Opera is what you use on Android mobiles and tablets to regain your sanity and have proper text reflow ;-p

Anyway, I was thinking to tweet the text of the splash page and announce that the official account is euruko and not eurukoathens anymore

nikosd commented 11 years ago

As @chief said, Whatever issue should be opened in https://github.com/euruko2013/site and not here.

For the record : I have enabled analytics and google webmaster tools. To whom shall I grant access?

nikosd commented 11 years ago

@pagojo I believe it's a good thing to do but please co-ordinate it with @fotos since we had something in mind.

nolamesa commented 11 years ago

Beautiful work guys! Well done to all of you!!

Regarding twitter a couple of notes:

Ok I added the icon we had in the repo as the euruko twitter image. Also at the background I added the website main image. I am not sure if we want something else but it works for now :)
