Why was the Japanese deleted? #15

Just because someone translated a line, it doesn't suddenly make the Japanese worthless! What's going on?!

SpoilerCompiler commented 11 years ago

No idea. I usually toss the translation in beside it in parentheses instead of deleting it because I think that the Japanese is still useful to double check the translation.

eva3 commented 11 years ago

That was done by the transcriptor of the audio himself. ( @onuuuuu )

He probably thought it would be cleaner to have only untranslated text there.

Do you want me to add it back now or in the proof-reading stage? Actually, you have full control over the repository. Add it back when you think to be the best moment. Provide a good commit message though, so people don't delete it again.

Reichu commented 11 years ago

SpoilerCompiler: Absolutely! I mean, over a decade later and we're still double-checking translations of the original series. The Japanese is always useful. Always.

I'll reinstate the text. It would be nice to eventually have the whole thing, since there is a lot of stuff I'd like to go over, and my listening comprehension is a bit... yeah. And AFAIK there's no concerted effort in the Japanese fandom to magic up a script from the audio, unfortunately... :(

How about this, we keep the JAPANESE-TEXT section only with untranslated sentences.

Once everything is translated, we add the entire Japanese script, so people can verify the translation.

By the way, here is an old version of JAPANESE-TEXT: https://raw.github.com/eva3/Evangelion--3.0-Translation/489e7dbef9b98b872d92f11972a902e72f9ae9f3/JAPANESE-SCRIPT

This is why Github is so good, we can check back the code as it was before ANY commit.

@Reichu

I don't know if you have seen, but I commented over your translation over here: https://github.com/eva3/Evangelion--3.0-Translation/commit/ab13e0fd569470c4e3d49f636f4d356e6de7a689

I think it would be easiest and most intuitive just to leave the Japanese text as a resource that can be readily consulted and added to, and indicate in the translation where stuff is missing. I've been putting quite a bit of work into scrounging up the Japanese dialogue, so that it's there for all the proofreaders. Don't really want to see it disappear again.

eva3 commented 11 years ago

Well, I think everything is fine now, then.

Great work with the Japanese dialogue and timing!

Godspeed.
