Update TRANSLATION

Updated a bit of the translation. Instead of Glasses I changed it to four eyes as that's the English equivalent, changed a bit of the sentence structure to sound more natural and translated a portion towards the end. I've seen the movie twice so I've got a bit of context for that scene. The rest I haven't translate because I cant remember.

Kept it "Glasses" for now until we decide on the final translation. コネメガネ refers to the fact that Mari got to be an Eva pilot through her connections, and that she wears glasses, like how Shinji got to be an Eva pilot because of his father, and Rei because of bias from Gendo. Literally, it would be "glasses connections." However, that doesn't sound too good. On the other hand, "Nerd" or "Four-eyes" doesn't make the fact of the connections explicit. Let's wait and see if someone has a creativity alternative.

The following lines also haven't been changed yet:

For now, "Glasses" works as a cute nickname, I think.

BTW, for, お帰り。碇シンジ君。待っていたよ @00:07:23, the last line should have left "I've been waiting for you." Of course, the "for you" part is implied, but so much in Japanese is. :p

People have been suggesting "favo(u)red glasses", as well as "beloved glasses" and "spoiled four-eyes".

In my opinion, "favo(u)red glasses" sounds good and transmit the message. It's not as cute as just "Glasses", though. But I guess when she's called that way, cuteness is not implied, after all.

"Favored glasses" sets my Engrish warning bells off pretty fast. That's the problem with most / all of these proposals: they sound like things that somebody who speaks English as a second or third language might use in speech, at best. My suggestion? Just forget about translating "kone megane" as an actual nickname, and work in the fact that Asuka thinks Mari got to be a pilot through her "connections" at one of the points that "kone megane" is used. This way, people watching the sub will at least get the information.

It's an option, but I guess that'd be pretty weird. But, oh well, what do I know? Proposing ideas can't hurt...

In translation, one wants to avoid leaving whole phrases untranslated and cluttering the screen with notes. These are practices that fan translation has been struggling to get away from for quite some time now.

It might be feasible to display select notes during the credits, though. E.g.:

• Asuka's nickname for Mari, "Glasses" = /kone megane/, and literally refers to the fact that... (...)

"Cheaters" is a synonym for glasses that I think works except that it's not well-known. "Rei-Bans?" Does it have to be the same thing every time? We could mix it up a little?

I also think at the very least we dont need to keep repeating the connections part of the text. It works in Japanese because of the way Japanese is, but all it really does it serve to make the English translation messy and it imparts a useful bit of information, but we only need to know about it once. That being said, in Japanese people often say megane no hito etc for someone with glasses and in this case megane is just a shortened version of that. So if we consider that, have you ever heard anyone be called Glasses? Certainly not in England. It's always four eyes / 4 eyes. Its equally mean as calling someone megane as you should just use their name. So its used in the same way, almost as a nickname kind of thing.

Asukas personality also seems like the kind to say four eyes, as shes said stuff like "teachers pet" and stuff previously for the other pilots. Four eyes, teachers pet, etc strike the same chord for me.

Do people still get called "four-eyes"? It almost sounds quaint to me...

That said, my preference for "Glasses" is probably due to the show Gargoyles, where it was the moniker of a tough gangster who happened to wear glasses. (Admittedly, that's a pretty silly reason for me to prefer it over the alternatives...)

Well, if everyone else is comfortable with "four-eyes", may as well go for it. If someone can think of a creative way to incorporate a "connections" reference into one of lines mentioning of "kone megane", that's probably also the way to go.

However, I don't have a better alternative as of now.

I personally like Four-Eyes. All of Asuka's nicknames for people tend to be mean-spirited, like Stupid Shinji, calling Rei a Doll, so this fits her personality.
