the FO argument in WoS searches will allow you to search by funder... This is useful / interesting in a short-term ARDC study ...

I read this paper this morning - which is absolutely phenomenal and we should talk about - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-022-01397-5 ... In it they match 10million publications with government documents, patents, media mentions, and funding information to study the public good of public research ... regarding the latter "we integrate funding records, using the Dimensions dataset, which includes 5 million projects funded by 400 funding agencies worldwide and links each funded project with its resulting publications." ...

Their data from Microsoft Academic Graph and USPTO is here https://kellogg-cssi.github.io/science_public/ They specifically do not make the funding data public - but to me that is extremely important because we need that to build the economic impact of OSS / RSE

Two thoughts:

  1. We can likely get our hands on the Dimensions data - I will ask around about access
  2. I would like to take some time with you (and hopefully others) to talk about replication of this with Software - in some sense I think we can do a "public impact of public code" in a similar way - using government apps and documents, patents, and funding data ... This would be very high impact and could be the basis of a chapter for your diss - will take time to design correctly but very inspiring work to build off of.
