Do we want to be able to log when things go wrong? Additionally, do we want an email when things break?

Yes and yes. Preferably even sms when things go wrong! I wouldn't consider it a high priority though...

This is partially fixed in the latest set of changes (monitoring). It doesn't log web errors, but scanner errors and SMS sending errors will be covered.
