Description:
1. Term name: phylogenetic distribution evidence
2. Definition: A type of phylogenetic evidence characterized by the mapping of
the character states of living organisms onto phylogenies using the method of
maximum parsimony.
3. Comment: example of use: “The presence of paired evaginated hemispheres
and olfactory bulbs in both agnathan and gnathostome radiations suggests that
such hemispheres were also present in the common ancestor.” PMID: 7013637
Northcutt RG, Evolution of the telencephalon in nonmammals. Ann. Rev. Neurosci.
(1981)
4. Suggested parent term: ECO:0000080 phylogenetic evidence
5. Reference for the definition: PMID: 21238344 Cunningham CW et al.,
Reconstructing ancestral character states: a critical reappraisal. Trends Ecol.
Evol. (1998)

Additional information:
We use the Evidence Codes Ontology to annotate homology of anatomy between
animals, in the context of Bgee (http://bgee.unil.ch/) and of Uberon
(http://uberon.org/). There are many anatomical structures whose homology is
supported by the phylogeny, i.e. an anatomical structure exists in several taxa
of a monophyletic group, hence the parsimonious hypothesis is that their
ancestor already possessed said structure. Thus, a term for this type of
evidence would be extremely useful.

Thanks Frederic. Your ticket was extremely informative and made term creation
very easy! With your permission, I'd like to use it in future documentation for
users.

I have added ECO:0000355 to eco-edit.obo. It will be available in the next
official eco.obo release, as well. I'm not exactly sure when that will be, but
it I will see to it that it happens soon. I would also like to apologize for
the long delay in adding this term. Thanks for your patience and for using ECO.
