Field "unitization" of coins. #2

We need a field to state the "unitization" of coins. As you know, during the Roman Republic and the first century it was quite common to split coins. Examples: http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.68866 http://numismatics.org/collection/1953.171.1066 http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.78842 http://ikmk.smb.museum/object?id=18215336 http://ikmk.smb.museum/object?id=18215337 All of these examples do not follow a standard way to note that the coin was halfed after it was stucked (here: Notes: halfed, Notes: coin cut in half, As (halbiert)). If we want to create an automated report for halfed coins we have to use a defined field for it. If we think further, then we see that there are quartered coins as well. We do see spltted coins 3/4, >1/2, <1/4, middle pieces, segements, … as well.

So, for the common coins language dependend settings like "halfed", "quartered" could be used. I can think of a percentage value as well (25, 50 75, …), or maybe the above strings or numeric values. The approach might be discussed with other numismatican.

In addition, the split itself should be noted (optional) like "cut" or "fracture". It should be possible to enter it via the UI. Maybe there is already something like that, but I wasn't able to find anything adequate.

This is probably something that needs to be taken up with the Nomisma.org scientific committee, as we will need to develop a standardized terminology for this. The Nomisma ontology has a class for these types of alterations, http://nomisma.org/ontology#SecondaryTreatment, but none of actually been defined yet.

What's the procedure to trigger the scientific committee? Are you going to trigger them or should I write an email? If so, to whom should send it?

I sent the email. There's currently a multi-sheet spreadsheet of secondary treatments, manufacture processes, etc. working its way through the committee. Some of this is necessary for Clare Rowan's Roman tokens project as well, so I expect to be able to publish these concepts to Nomisma in the next few weeks. I will send out a follow-up email. Once the Nomisma IDs exist, then I will be able to update the controls in Numishare to link to a drop down menu of terms.
