Out of curiosity, does this example uses any database? I couldn't find one...

According to https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/wiki/Spring-Boot-with-Java-9-and-above

Java 11 is supported as of Spring Boot 2.1.0.M2.

issue resolved after editing pom.xml to use the latest version:

<parent>
                <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
                <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
                <version>2.1.4.RELEASE</version>
                <relativePath /> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>

The example uses HSQL, a Java-based in memory database. You should probably use Spring Boot 2.1.3 and Spring Cloud Greenwich.SR1 . I am not sure whether Spring Cloud Finchley works with Spring Boot 2.1.4.
