Improve cov #212

Working in chunks to improve test coverage. Building tests actually pointed out some bugs deep in the codebase.

I'm trying to fix the pandas has no attribute CategoricalDtype build issue on Windows. I'll update once I resolve that asking for another review @tjduigna .
