the simple attempt was super ugly but works (the caption was full width, this looks kinda sensible), otoh aligning the caption to table size requires some extra markup (bad).

Does the extra markup pay off?

this should eventually fix #2

Table position looks good, however in the pdf from artifacts, the table is titled as Figure 2.1 instead of Table 2.1 (might be unrelated, I didn't check the previous version).
