If we are adding Win 3.1 as well let me know as there are more that I excluded due to not being DOS
Are we adding affiliated soundtracks?
IE the Mortal Kombat Motion Picture soundtrack
Lastly, heres a list of websites to do with game soundtracks and music that may help as sources of either ideas or the music itself:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_games_that_use_Red_Book_CD_audio - List of games that had Redbook Audio http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page - Website that lists the music of many games (with rips), and has info on game music formats, soundcards, etc https://vgmdb.net/db/albums.php - Another source for complete game soundtracks if needed
The DOS Version of Descent does not have Redbook Audio.
I ripped and uploaded the CD Audio from Alone in the Dark 1-3 and put it into the github folder. The song titles are taken from here. The ordering is different to how it is ordered on that site but the music is the same.
~~@exoscoriae I ripped / scanned the Realms of Arkania 3 - Shadows over Riva (1996) Soundtrack, added to the github folder (for eXoDOS Manuals and Extras)~~
Updated my list up top of added soundtracks
Reposts from above, now with check boxes
Motion picture\affiliated soundtracks are fine
Best I could find for the 1995 "Mortal Kombat - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" https://www.amazon.com/Mortal-Kombat-Original-Picture-Soundtrack/dp/B000000GSQ, otherwise I found 320kbps mp3 copy of the album which ive uploaded to the synology in the Manuals-Extras Discovery & Upgrade folder
Read about "The Fat Man and The Team Fat - Wing Commander I Complete Original Soundtrack - MT-32 Archival Edition (2022) (digital)"
not sure how I feel about "mt-32 soundtracks"
aren't there like 800 mt32 games? lol
yeah, I only noted that one as it was a special separate release by Fat Man made in 2022 just for the music he made for Wing Commander. Recorded direct from his Roland as he intended it when he wrote the original game music
I'm ok with that, as WC is a major game. Not inclined to pay $10 for it though ;)
I found it on Spotify, Amazon music, etc if that helps in future. For now if the quality is acceptable I have uploaded 320kbps mp3 version of the album to the synology in the github\manuals-extras folder
Here is another iconic game music rip I would like to add to the requests: https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/star-control-2-3do
That site you linked me for the MW2 soundtrack is quite the collection of game rips and soundtracks. I couldnt find Star control 2 in the IBM PC/AT platform, but the 3do music is the same
I would like to add 'Turrican Soundtrack Anthology (4CD Version)' in FLAC with booklet https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/turrican-soundtrack-anthology-cd-version
I ripped and uploaded the CD Audio files (in FLAC format) from the Battle Arena Thosinden iso and put it into the github folder with covers. The song titles are taken from the PSX version [here] https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/battle-arena-toshinden-ost-psx PC music is slightly different, and there are only 3 new songs added (Player select, Jim stage (secret character), Continue).
I ripped and uploaded the music for Realms of Arkania 1+2. The song titles for the first game are all in english but for the second game it is german titles only. The tracks 17-20 on both cds of RoA 2 are identical. It is music for the options menu, travelling, fights and party death. I guess they have to be the same no matter which cd is currently in your drive. I omitted them from the first CD so it has only 17 instead of 21 tracks now.
As discussed there are three types of game music:
1: Official OST sound track releases. Basically, a stand alone audio cd. This can be anything from an OST to a free pack in audio CD that shipped with the game. Hell, in the case of Johnny Bazookatone, some pc magazine included a free cd soundtrack for the game as a cover pack ion disc. Or in the case of the Mortal Kombat Album, this was a companion CD released to coincide with the home releases. The title track was later used in the opening of the Sega CD version, but at release, it had no direct correlation other than sharing the name of the game and having songs written about the various fighters.
2: Games with Redbook CD Audio. Generally this entails ripping the cd tracks. The challenge here, is they don't always have track names. So, there is a longer process in terms of filling out metadata, as sites like discogs won't have an entry for this type of game. However, I am not opposed to adding games that had CD audio. That said, it isn't always clean. I have found, for example, The 7th Guest has a 30 min audio file on it's second disc. It is multiple music tracks all smushed together into a single track with no breaks in between.
3: Midi sound tracks, generally recorded using the in game files. This one has lots of potential issues. When browsing the VGM website, you will find games like DOOM have been dumped multiple times. This may involve using different midi hardware or just using different sound fonts. The issue with this, is it is not definitive. It is subjective. It is an interpretation of the original music that may or may not match the composer's original vision. When using a sound font, or even hardware, that it wasn't originally composed on, there is always a chance that a certain instrument won't sound right.
We have decided to actively track down audio belonging to category 1, add category 2 where we are aware of it, and add category 3 where the audio is well known or excellent.
So far added is:
