Ok, it is cracked but: Discord user Tyranthraxus has noted that the crack for this game could be better.

OK, so after some deeper experimentation, here's what I've discovered...
The eXoDOS version is cracked, but as you said you do have to enter in something at the second prompt (you can enter nothing on the first prompt). If you enter nothing at all, then the copy protection penalty gets enabled in-game, which causes all enemies and all characters to miss all attacks. Combat becomes an endless loop, basically.
By comparison/contrast, the GOG version of the game is cracked in such a way where you don't have to enter anything. You just hit once and the copy protection is bypassed (though, my understanding is that this doesn't apply to the German version of the game which still requires some kind of input - just a guess but GOG is likely just relying on someone else's arcane work and they just have whatever version of the crack they have for the German language one).
Also an interesting factoid, replacing the game's main executable (WROOT.EXE) doesn't change the copy protection. I replaced the eXoDOS version with the GOG version to see what would happen and the game behaved exactly the same, so the copy protection stuff is somewhere outside of WROOT.EXE
