Brainstorm ideas for other places where people may discuss food prices: News articles, reddit comments, Forums in India etc.

http://www.tradingeconomics.com/india/consumer-price-index-cpi may be of interest.

We don't necessarily need only data directly related to food. Any kind of data that might be correlated to food prices is useful. We can even go as far as to track restaurants in India and see how many people have visited them in a given period on e.g. Foursquare to see how many people afford to eat out given the period.

Some extended datasets. Maybe someone has looked into these.

  1. The Wholesale Price Index in India It provides weekly and monthly commodity price index (rice, wheat..) But recent data may be missing, for instance, rice only has weekly data from 2005-2012 http://www.eaindustry.nic.in
  2. World Bank India development indicator database Some may relate to our subject: GDP annual growth, average monthly temperature... http://data.worldbank.org/country/india
And they also provide a convenient search interface to query their development indicator database Eg: Country(India) -> Series(agricultural value added % of GDP) -> Time(1995-2013) http://databank.worldbank.org/data/views/variableSelection/selectvariables.aspx?source=world-development-indicators#
  3. World Bank Global Food Price Index http://siteresources.worldbank.org/EXTPOVERTY/Resources/336991-1311966520397/Food-Price-Watch-March-2013.htm
