Broken Link in 'Edit the Firmware.md' #14

Closed bryn51 closed 2 years ago

Beneath the paragraph heading : SAMD21 firmware below the paragraph text appears a Link 'Reset Button'. When the link is clicked, a 404 error is delivered.

Reset Button The link url is: https://github.com/fablabbcn/smartcitizen-docs/blob/master/assets/images/sck_2/SCK21_Reset.png

@bryn51 I see other broken links and may have an understanding about why they are breaking. It looks like a directory name and also a directory structure changed, breaking more than just this link. Things that were under "/assets" may all be broken. I will continue to check and merge my findings here to fix maybe all of these link problems at once.

Hi Dixon

Are you one of the Fablabbcn team ? If so (or even if not) it’s nice to hear from you.

I am collaborating with Oscar concerning the custom SCS that he is helping me with.

This causes me to attempt to use the documentation in a greater sense than most other users; and thus I come across issues.

In past years I am a documentation expert and thus a perfectionist in this field. Thus I have an eye for flaws others lack.

I admire the work of Fablabbcn very much and working with Oscar has made me appreciate that the team has a very full work schedule and so little things like this might escape attention. I consider that I perform a service by identifying such issues thus to make a contribution to the project.

Anyway thanks for responding, it makes this effort worthwhile.

Cheers Bryn Parrott

Hi Bryn,

Thank you for your note and especially the background of what you are trying to accomplish. I am not of the core team, just an interested person.

My interest is developing smart cities and also not re-inventing the wheel. There is much to learn here, and my goal in looking through all this in the short run could be the same as yours; make sure this is usable.

The work is really terrific, and it feels good to help. If that can turn into something where we can deploy more sensors in better ways and gather more data, that would be amazing.

Hi Dixon

Ok I can let you in on what I’m doing to give you and idea. Firstly myself: I am a retired systems analyst, programmer and electronics communications technician from Australia, living in Taiwan. Taiwan has issues with air pollution. Not so bad as China, but still a concern.

Secondly my involvement with SmartCitizen. Early last year a friend introduced me to Arduino and I quickly developed a project of my own that was an environment monitor. At the end, I found Smart Citizen and realised they did it all before me and had a much better product. So I bought an SCK 2.1 and built it.

I realised that the capabilities of that kit are limited and to be comprehensive it would need enhancement. It’s just a simple starter project. I looked at getting a commercial product then realised they have just as limited capability and expensive too.

Then I moved to Taiwan, and I have been shut indoors for a full year now. Lots of spare time. In about January I looked at the SCS and it’s much greater capability and can easily be extended by a clear pathway.

So I did a gap analysis and came up with a plan to extend it by adding:

I spent many months researching the best approach and selecting peripherals. Along the way I found Spec Sensors gas sensors to be much cheaper than Alphasense. They are less sensitive however it’s a big difference in cost.

I worked with Oscar from FablabsBCN to help design and deliver the core SCS for me to then add my extensions, including firmware development with help from Oscar.

Fablabbcn have quite limited resources, they are primarily a teaching institution, part of a university. But the users of SCK do not understand that actually they need to contribute to the effort, there is some frustration with sometimes slow responses on the forum from the team. So, I find myself trying to help out other users on the forum pages. So people do not get to think the project is not active. There is help when they need it. I will, over time, also try to contribute to improvement of documentation in areas that I touch on.

I have now received the SCS and I am about to start firmware development, my reason for going through the documentation so carefully.

If this project turns out to have a satisfactory conclusion I anticipate doing more projects, so I have equipped myself with some test equipment including an oscilloscope to help with fine tuning and debugging.

So, that’s what I am up to ….

Perhaps we can collaborate at some level.

Hi Bryn,

Pardon the delay responding, alas due to a tooth problem.

Let me get re-combobulated tomorrow, but I like the idea of collaborating.

First question, how does one buy this SCS kit so we have something to work with?

Hi both!

Thanks for pointing out the broken links, if you want to submit a Pull Request, feel free and we will check them when we have a bit of time, or if you prefer, we can create an issue with "Broken links". As I see it now, I think the original link from the topic is now fixed (thanks again!)

oscgonfer commented 2 years ago

As for the collaboration regarding SCS, you have inspired us to create a new projects section in the forum. It would be amazing to see how it grows, and I am sure that everyone would be amazed to see your work.

Finally @dixon1e, if are planning on getting similar hardware as Bryn, make sure you are on the same page in terms of cost, and we can give technical support. For the units, we only sell them after discussing via email at info@smartcitizen.me
