Country request: Croatia #56

Open mdimjasevic opened 4 years ago

mdimjasevic commented 4 years ago

Can you please process aerial images for Croatia such that buildings and roads are available?

jeffdefacto commented 4 years ago

Thanks for the request @mdimjasevic

I've added Croatia to our country request queue

jeffdefacto commented 4 years ago

Roads are now available

mdimjasevic commented 4 years ago

@jeffdefacto, that is great! Thank you!

Do you have any information on when will buildings be available?

jeffdefacto commented 4 years ago

Microsoft generates the currently supported buildings so its up to them at the moment

mdimjasevic commented 4 years ago

@jeffdefacto , can you be more specific about who is them? Can I check anywhere what's the status of their work? Do you have a contact I could reach out to?

jeffdefacto commented 4 years ago

Sorry for the delayed response. Took some time to get the proper contact point.

You can reach out to Microsoft directly for building related questions at MS_Buildings_MwAI@microsoft.com

We have Zagreb building footprints from lidar data, taken in 2012, available for OSM:

https://osm-hr.org/2020/04/16/topografska-podloga-sa-zipp-geoportala-dostupna-za-osm/ (translation)

Also we have 2012(25cm) and 2018(20cm) aerial imagery available for OSM:

https://osm-hr.org/2019/04/12/digitalni-ortofoto-grada-zagreba-2012-na-tms-serveru/ (translation) https://osm-hr.org/2019/04/15/digitalni-ortofoto-grada-zagreba-2018-na-tms-serveru/ (translation)

One of options for processing that data is RapiD: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-hr/2020-April/002732.html

Can this help?

mdimjasevic commented 4 years ago

Hi Hrvoje,

Can this help?

Thank you for this! However, I was more interested to have this for the whole country, and not just the capital. At the moment I am interested in adding buildings for my hometown Križevci, and this is what initiated my interest to make the country request here.

Hi Marko, as I recall we met at the last Zagreb meetup?

I think MS team that does building extraction uses Maxar(or other) satellite imagery.

Last year we managed to get DGU to change terms of use for their WMS so we can use it for OSM:

This way we got rights to use imagery from 2011, 2014-2016, and 2017: https://osm-hr.org/2019/06/04/pravo-koristenja-mreznih-usluga-prostornih-podataka-drzavne-geodetske-uprave/ (translation)

Later they published imagery from 2018: https://osm-hr.org/2019/07/11/objavljen-digitalni-ortofoto-drzavne-geodetske-uprave-2018/ (translation)

And they have plans for 2020&2021 imagery ...

Benefit from using this layers(compared to satellite imagery) for tracing buildings is that they have almost no offset, some buildings may be at certain angle because of low flight path, but their base is correctly aligned.

We are in a process of planing the best course of mapping all the building in Croatia from those aerial imagery layers(except for Zagreb which will be handled from vector/raster combination), you can participate in the topic at mailing list: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-hr/2020-April/002749.html

That is the best accuracy and precisions source we have access to, and even if somehow we get MS team to extract buildings from Maxar(or other) satellite imagery, they would also have to be aligned to DGU aerial imagery.

Only solution that would be better than that is if we somehow get rights to use buildings from cadaster plans, but that is not going to happen soon :(

BTW DGU 2017 and 2018 are currently marked as best for Croatia (just waiting for pull request to be accepted to https://github.com/osmlab/editor-layer-index) and we should use best available source.

If you want help mapping Križevi we can use our TM instance(https://tasks.osm-hr.org/) to organize it.

We want to have the best map, not just the most filled up map :)

@hbogner , I believe we met.

Thank you for the detailed report. I'm an occasional OSM contributor and I don't feel like committing myself too much, hence I contribute every now and then with little details in an unstructured way. Having buildings added seemed like a good thing to have (without drawing every single one of them by hand), hence this thread/issue. In your reply here you gave lots of details and I appreciate this, but it's too technical and overwhelming for me so I'll use whatever someone else makes ready for rookies like myself.

danil-kirsanov commented 4 years ago

Hi @hbogner, now we have an (experimental) mechanism of sharing your own building footprints data with RapiD through ESRI integration -- would it work for your case? https://tech.fb.com/osm-ready-data-sets/

hbogner commented 4 years ago

Hi @danil-kirsanov, thank you for the info. As someone who was forced to use ESRI for some time only thing I can now say is: I don't do ESRI ! Any other ways?

danil-kirsanov commented 4 years ago

Do you have some technical concerns? There are several similar datasets already available there, check it out: https://openstreetmap.maps.arcgis.com/home/group.html?id=bdf6c800b3ae453b9db239e03d7c1727

hbogner commented 3 years ago

No technical concerns. I just chose not to use ESRI anymore :) I'll ask other Croatia members if they want to touch it.

cbeddow commented 1 year ago

@hbogner I am tracking this and the separate issue I opened here around the WMTS option: https://github.com/facebook/RapiD/issues/676

@hbogner do you know if there are aerial imagery layers for Croatia already available as a tile service?

hbogner commented 1 year ago

Raster data is TMS https://tms.osm-hr.org/knin-2007 https://tms.osm-hr.org/zagreb-2012 https://tms.osm-hr.org/zagreb-2018 There are some more, not public yet, still preparing.

Vector data is geojson, can be in gpkg too. Preview here: https://tms.osm-hr.org/zagreb-buildings/ There are some more, not public yet, still preparing.
