0.5.4 - UI not being translated

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install 0.5.4
2. go to localhost/vlc-shares
3. the page is not translated and the text is the 'variable name

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
- expect to see the correct text, worked fine with 0.5.3

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
0.5.4 (worked fine with 0.5.3)
The system is a QNAP TS-119
ZF is version 1.11.5
Language is en_GB (but also tried with spanish)

Please provide any additional information below.
See attached traces.
For some reason only the Test page seems to be translated correctly.

I changed the escape sequence, redid the test and still fails... but a reason I 
myself still don't understand : 

I commented the line with ; and this is now fine... but I must be missing 
something as I can not fine why the line is wrong ::
