So, apparently this has been functional for a good while in Debian and also in Ubuntu 12.10, not full Jack Render support but encoding anyway.
There's a dependency issue with 12.04 or something: http://askubuntu.com/questions/211054/how-to-convert-a-sound-file-to-opus
I hope this can be addressed somehow…
