We have decided (hesitantly) to go with topic 1. This will involve us creating a web app which presents a world issue using some publicly available data in an interactive manner.

We discussed some options on Skype but please think about more ideas when you have time and comment below.

From our Skype call we got (add ones I miss):

• Service which identifies best and worst users on Twitter or Reddit
• Service which calculates the overall happiness of people by going through Twitter/Facebook data
• Service which analyzes bus schedules and real time feeds and presents data about bus lateness
• Something that uses http://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.resources.api
• Service to show estimated email to spam ratio for various email providers (maybe not possible)

We could do a service which identifies grammar and spelling errors in tweets and reports on them, addressing illiteracy.

Illiteracy isn't really a problem faced by our planet.

2. Illiteracy is a problem faced by the human race, not by the planet. Planet issues are usually environmental, and about sustainability. I would use the partial definition by UN at Our Common Future, and illiteracy doesn't really seem to be a problem faced by our planet.
   • Climate change: at 18 degree Celsius avg temp. ecological will be destroyed
   • Earthquakes: natural disasters, could lead to volcanic eruptions that leads to climate change
   • Food/water waste: not sustainable

@PEMapModder is correct. I did not see that earlier, it's my bad for bringing up illiteracy. Those problems are all legitimate problems, however, many of them have been already used by other services (as discussed in the Skype meeting you missed out on). Natural disasters, for example, have been widely covered by websites, climate change (particularly CO2 amounts) have also been extensively covered. Food/water waste is a potential issue we can focus on, however, we need a more specifics, any ideas @PEMapModder?

Just pointing out that our planet doesn't care about climate change, the human race are the ones who have a problem not the planet.
