What are the guidelines for contributing to this project? Fork, modify, and 
create patch for Rietveld?

Pretty much, I would suggest creating an issue here first with the problem you 
are attempting to address.  That way we can talk before you expend the effort.  
We might already be working on it.

I don't understand why you didn't just forked the existing and excellent
