Editor writes:

We estimate the current length of your paper to be ~1800 words, which exceeds our usual limit of 1500 words for Letters with four display items. Keep in mind that important technical details that are not central to the main message of the paper can be moved into the Methods section (right now, titled Appendix -- it is far below our general guideline of 3000 words).

I think we are now short enough (at least, the editor can come back with other suggestions if we are still too long).
