winetricks should avoid using xmessage

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Don't run KDE or Gnome, but have one or both installed
2. Start winetricks. 
3. Have fun with an immensely wide xmessage

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expected: A labeled list of options. Not expected: All in one line. 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

12.1.2010. On Debian/Sid. 

Please provide any additional information below.

Well, it would make sense for people running WindowMaker or xfce who are
not running KDE or Gnome to still use zenity or at least kdialog if it's
installed.

Nah, that's a defect.   Fixed in svn, please test.  I used the same
approach as you but restructured a bit.  I've been meaning to do that for
a long time.
