am wondering what is the max amount of hdd i can add to my system?

We're talking about baremetal or virtual nas? My first setup was 12 HDD (6x MB SATA + 6x ASM1166 PCI card) but it's really huge and inconvenient solution for home use.

But better ask questions like this one on xpenology forum.
