I get this when trying to run qbt with any arguments other than -h or --help

Could you provide more details, please? What version of qbt you are using and on which OS?

In general, this error is usually a result of corrupted settings file on Linux/macOS, and can be fixed by resetting the settings:

qbt settings reset all

Ok cool that fixed it for me. Just for reference I'm on v1.8.24012, kubuntu 23.10
