Files or Nautilus not running when start from Application Menu #389

This issue tracker is intended only for Silverblue specific issues. We would like to ask you to try to reproduce the issue on a relevant Fedora Workstation release. If you will be able to reproduce there, then please report it in Red Hat Bugzilla (see How to file a bug) or in upstream (preferred for GNOME projects) and not in this issue tracker.

Describe the bug

A clear and concise description of what the bug is.

I was able to use Files or Nautilus when using Fedora 36 Silverblue. However, upon upgrading to Fedora 37 Silverblue, the Files application or Nautilus doesn't launch from the Application Menu (WIN/SUPER) reliably. Most of the time, it doesn't launch. Even launching from the Terminal application via nautilus doesn't seem to yield anything.

To Reproduce

Please describe the steps needed to reproduce the bug:

  1. Upgrade to F37 from F36 Silverblue.
  2. Attempt to launch Files or nautilus
  3. Nothing happens.

Expected behavior

A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.

The Files app should launch allowing me to view my files.

Screenshots If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem.

So far I'm having to use KDE Dolphin Flatpak to browse my files. I don't see any errors related to nautilus in journalctl either.

I think this event occurred when Files window crashed.

Close to it. I did this.

I don't know exactly what you did from this thread but here you have local versioned packages for RPM Fusion and you should switch to unversioned ones using the command from the link I pasted above:

If you can get a crash dump or a backtrace then reporting to the upstream project or on Fedora's Bugzilla would be great.

I don't know exactly what you did from this thread but here you have local versioned packages for RPM Fusion and you should switch to unversioned ones using the command from the link I pasted above:

I authored that thread. I did the original post. I did that from Fedora 35 to Fedora 36 and 36 to 37.

Any generated core dumps should be available via coredumpctl. For example:

I am attempting to generate a coredump, but when i run journalctl -xe --no-pager --follow and then proceed to click on Files or issue the nautlilus command, nothing is output to that or coredumpctl.

I can restart the PC and get one run of Files in before it crashes and stops working. I'll try that and see if I get a coredump today.

I can restart the PC and get one run of Files in before it crashes and stops working. I'll try that and see if I get a coredump today.

Thank you! And of course now that I've rebooted, the issue I reported isn't happening right now. It eventually happens.

Okay, Nautilus just failed to start, however, there is no entry in coredumpctl to dump out. This is what I get in journalctl for launching Nautilus from GNOME app menu

This upstream issue looks very similar - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/5596

I think to progress further, you would need to install the debug packages for gnome-shell and attach a debugger to the running gnome-shell process as described in https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/Bugzilla/GettingTraces/Details

If you can get a trace using those methods, I would report it on the upstream GNOME Gitlab tracker.

I don't know exactly what you did from this thread but here you have local versioned packages for RPM Fusion and you should switch to unversioned ones using the command from the link I pasted above:

 LocalPackages: rpmfusion-free-release-37-1.noarch rpmfusion-nonfree-release-37-1.noarch

I authored that thread. I did the original post. I did that from Fedora 35 to Fedora 36 and 36 to 37.

You need to run:

$ sudo rpm-ostree update \
    --uninstall rpmfusion-free-release \
    --uninstall rpmfusion-nonfree-release \
    --install rpmfusion-free-release \
    --install rpmfusion-nonfree-release

and reboot.

That should move them from LocalPackages to LayeredPackages, without a version attached.

Closing as F37 is now EOL and this would need to be reproduced and investigated on recent Fedora releases.
