For some reason the processing of the wallpaper includes indexing colors to 8bit. Not 8bit per channel, but 8bit indexed color with Floyd Steinberg dithering. Not only does this not result in smaller filesize, the dithering doesn't make the crazy color banding disappear either.
Looks like pngquant will produce PNGs with indexed color. I'd definitely not do that for smooth gradients image like this. 256 colors just ain't gonna cut it even with dithering.
