Ugly flicker when opening any post #91

Open ghost opened 10 years ago

ghost commented 10 years ago

When you tap a post in the left pane, the right pane begins to load content but flickers to a weirdly-proportioned frame for an instant. It does this on just about every tap. I use a Surface Pro 2.

I don't see this problem when using my desktop computer, though.

Do you have any more details on this? Screenshot, etc? Are you rotating or doing anything odd?

I've got a repro video and some information for you! Here's a youtube video of it happening. Note that it happens in link posts, but it's not as consistent, so I did self posts only.

Here's a screenshot of the issue the instant it is happening:

My hypothesis is that it's related to DPI zoom in windows. My desktop is set to 100% and this issue doesn't seem to happen. My Surface Pro 2 is set to 150% and the content appears at 2/3 its size (100 is 2/3 of 150) for the instant of the flicker.

I hope this explains it or at least that I have helped, because the flicker makes this suck on my Surface Pro 2!

The idea of it happening inconsistently is unsettling to me, as a fellow programmer. I looked a little closer and I think it does in fact happen every time, but that it's just a bit harder to see depending on the content.

Thanks for the video, that's awesome! Super helpful. That said, I'm not too sure why it's doing that, it actually reminds me of a weird graphics driver problem I've seen before. Are you doing anything 'special' with your device and/or resolution that you may be aware of? Otherwise my guess is it's the 150% zoom you mentioned. Can you try unsetting it and see if that fixes it?

I thought the DPI change to 100% would fix it, but it didn't :( I even tried rebooting. The flicker still happens, just like in the video.

This is actually a brand new Surface Pro 2 that's stock from Microsoft, with all windows updates installed. Aside from installing Visual Studio and a few other apps, no real tinkering has been done to it. I have not yet corrupted it with my curiosity =). I haven't gone in and changed a ton of settings or whatever.

I looked at my installed programs listing and nothing jumps out at me as unconventional. I don't see any apps that would tamper with video (overlays, screen recorders, etc).

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. If you have other Surface Pro users, maybe you could show them the video and see if it's happening to them. It might not be obvious to some users.

ok thanks for putting in the effort to help diagnose it! I have a friend with a surface 2 - I'll ask him if the issue persists for him as well.

Cool. It may just be a pro thing. We could get testers from /r/surface if you need them =)

dumptruckjon commented 9 years ago

closing this as we havent heard of any further repros nor did we repro ourselves. thanks for the feedback!

ghost commented 9 years ago

Still happens on Surface Pro 3 with a fresh Windows 10 install. Happens on every surface I've ever owned.

dumptruckjon commented 9 years ago

interesting, we will try further, thanks

ghost commented 9 years ago

Thanks for giving it another chance. If you can't repro on the first Surface Pro you get your hands on, let me know and I will ask /r/surface for help.
