I assume that is a supernode?

The cause of the problem is that each junction is currently modeled as a single node in OSM XML. This means that your roads come together to a single point for the supernode. This is partially also the same reason for roundabouts being single nodes with a roundabout symbol instead of being circular roads.

I have a solution in mind that could make it look a bit better, but it's currently not a high priority for me.

The new version (2.0) increases the resolution of the road curves a bit, although it doesn't address the issue with supernodes.
