Enable replying to a message without including @user at the beginning (for StatusNet)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Want to reply to something to keep context, I click @user on the previous 
dent
2. @user appears in the text box
3. Removing @user removes the reply information

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected once I click on @user, it remembers it is a reply, and I can adjust 
the text accordingly.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Ubuntu 11.04, Pidgin 2.7.11, Twitgin 0.3.0
