WIP Debian Stretch compatibility #14

This is a WIP PR, which should on completion provide full compatibility with Debian Stretch, fixing #7.

Since I just unlocked a freshly installed VM with no other changes to any of the code, I say this is all which needs to be done to make this code compatible with Debian 9.
