• news-please Version: 1.5.22

I had same issue, It worked for me after following the below steps:

• Close the IDE
• Uninstall newsplease (pip)
• Install it again
• Start the IDE.

Note: If you are using vscode and python venv. This happens time to time.

Also, This sounds silly, But It worked for me after following the above mentioned steps.
