Apparently the sorting spec in FHIR changed in the DSTU3 release: http://hl7.org/fhir/2016May/search.html#sort
It would be best if this was consistent with the spec syntax, although since it also means adding support for multiple params its probably a larger piece of work
Are you planning on implementing the new sorting in the future ?
