RFP Category: core-dev, & app-dev,

Proposer: holyaustin

Do you agree to open source all work you do on behalf of this RFP and dual-license under MIT and APACHE2 licenses?: "Yes"

Project Description

Critics of carbon accounting point to research suggesting that some carbon credits are not as green as they purport to be, with widely documented incidents of fraud, double-counting, and creative accounting rendering a large portion of carbon credits untrustworthy. It’s extremely difficult to quantify exactly how much CO2 a given project keeps out of the atmosphere, and poor quality credits have the potential to actively harm the environment by enabling companies to superficially offset their emissions whilst emitting more than they would have in the first place. Blockchain technology can record and transfer information flow reliably, realize point-to-point transactions between suppliers and demanders to achieve “decentralization”, and help to reduce the entry threshold for the carbon trading market. The role of data storage, collation, and accounting is the central technical approach for this project. Carbon credit purchase and offset will take center stage but funds that flow in can also be staked/farmed and compounded to increase the fund for decarbonization and reforestation exercises.

Development Roadmap

This project can be divided into the following milestones:

  1. Blockchain Back-end (Smart contract development)
  2. Front-end and documentation
  3. Data Analysis (collation and accounting)

Blockchain Back-end (Smart contract development)

This is where we concentrate on building the blockchain protocol with solidity smart contract. Various contracts to control the protocol will be written here. The following contract modules will be written

  1. Smart contract controller
  2. Kredith Library
  3. Kredith profiler
  4. Kredith Accounting
  5. Kredith NFT
  6. Kredith Vault + Compound Integration Likewise, This contract will be written, tested, and implemented to make sure it achieves the desired result.

Front-end and documentation

Upon completion of the smart contract, the frontend viz-a-viz UI/UX commences. The user interface will be designed with the utmost professionalism to give users a good experience while using the Dapp.

  1. The integration of both the backend codes with the frontend will be executed at this stage.
  2. The integration of decentralized storage to capture and store all user's carbon credit-related transactions.
  3. Documentation of the entire project will be done here.
  4. Advertisments and promotions using various social media channels.

Data Analysis (collation and accounting)

At this stage, the data that are stored on decentralized storage IPFS/Filecoin and those stored on-chain are harvested. A mathematical/statistical model will be applied to calculate the carbon credit offset efficiency of users. Users with good carbon credit offset efficiency will receive NFTs in return.

Documentation, Education, and Community

Adequate documentation and education on how the protocols work, and how users can key into the protocol. Steps how to encourage users to buy more carbon credit and these funds are staked to generate additional interest that they can use in the future. At the end of a campaign, the proceeds are divided among those who participated. Communities will be set up on various social media platforms like Telegram, Discord, and Twitter with various summits and workshops will be happening intermittently.

Other Deliverable

Specify any other deliverable proposed as part of this project.

Hey Holy! Sorry about the super long response time. Totally agreed on the need to make carbon offsets more transparent, and that web3 tools can have a huge effect in this space. The main issue with the proposal as I'm reading it right now is that a lot of other groups are doing something similar, like Toucan, Klima, Flowcarbon, Climate Coin, Regen and others. I think it's going to be hard to start something that is very similar to these projects and compete with them unless you have a unique strategy. What is your thinking about that?

We are working on a piece of this by building co2.storage. There might be pieces of this we could work with you to build through bounties or something similar, is that something you would be interested in?

Hi Filecoin grant team,

I have carefully looked into these propjects and am yet to see any doing carbon credit farming. i think this is a unique aspecet of my project that can give me a competitive edge to others. Secondly the projects specified the indept of our accounting as it relate to carbon credit.

i dont think that because an idea has many people, that we should not continue to strengthen on what is already existing. Research is contnues and definitely we have a gap to brdge.

Reconsider the project in the light of the highted strengths above on credit farming and accounting.

thanks

Augustine

Thanks for the thoughts; some questions:

orinayodele commented 1 year ago

Hi @holyaustin ! Have you been able to think about the questions above?

holyaustin commented 1 year ago

Hi,  I have been sick due to the stress and pressure as a software developer. I am recovering and will answer your question about kredith protocol by next week.  I hope next week will be fine by you. Thanks for reaching out.  Augustine

Hi, no worries! Look forward to hearing your comments next week.

holyaustin commented 1 year ago

I think this will help you under Kredith Protocol better.

  1. Well ideas rule the world. I only trying to bring something new concept into green computing. Since this is a blockchain thing, I am looking at a way to grow the amount that users pay for carbon credit through DEFI yield farming. The funds you use to buy your carbon credit can grow by some percentage with the power of Defi. I would like to leverage the Defi2.0 tokenomics inherited from OlympusDAO: The bonding and staking systems pioneered by OlympusDAO can be transposed to on-chain carbon markets. These can be used to enable users and holders of tokenized carbon credits to receive rewards for locking and permanently removing their carbon from the market

  2. Africa is not in the limelight as regards carbon offset. This project intends to include Africa and projects that will help offset carbon to climate issues in Africa. Kredith protocol will be looking at the following types of carbon offsets: Renewable Energy (Solar): Renewable energy offsets help to build or maintain solar grids, creating jobs, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, and bolstering the sector’s global growth. This project will be beneficial to Africa since Africa has a tropical climate. The solar project will be very beneficial here. Clean Water (Boreholes): provides clean water to communities by fixing and funding long-term maintenance for boreholes. How does this reduce carbon emissions? Families will no longer have to burn firewood to boil water for drinking, which will protect local forests, prevent carbon emissions and reduce indoor smoke pollution. In addition to the health and environmental benefits, the project will also create employment for locals. Agriculture: Soil is one of the important aspects of agriculture and can affect the amount of yield in the crops. During the years of agriculture, there has been a decrease in the amount of carbon that the soil is able to hold. The soil in agriculture is now holding 50% to 66% less carbon and this is due to the many practices that farmers or scientists use. Agriculture affects the environmental quality with the losses of nitrogen and phosphorus to the fields. Soil is a key component of Green Infrastructure (GI), but most urban soils are physically, chemically, or biologically unsuitable for use of GI. We work on improving soil for agriculture. This has dual benefits, the soil becomes sustainable and the agricultural crops decrease the carbon emitted into the atmosphere. There is food and our environment is safe. Afforestation / Reforestation: Reforestation includes planting trees or allowing trees to regrow on land that had recently been covered with forest. Afforestation involves planting trees on the land that has not recently been covered with forest. This helps sustains our world.

From the foregoing, these projects are multi-faceted in nature, they solve the climate issue and at the same time solve the sustainable development goals: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 13.

  1. We would like to collate various carbon credit and offset data for the populace. This is one aspect that is not readily available. As stated that this is what Filecoin green is currently doing, I might be wrong, but I thought that Filecoin green is collating data of their miners (validators) only. If Filecoin green is actively working on this, then we can collaborate on this to avoid “reinventing the wheel”. Data included are carbon offset projects, credit issuances, and credit retirements by four major voluntary offset project registries—Climate Action Reserve (CAR), American Carbon Registry (ACR), Verra (VCS), and Gold Standard.

Hi @holyaustin thanks for getting back to us! This seems quite ambitious, and we would love to award you a microgrant of $5,000 to scope out one of the elements that you have elaborated on above. Could you please fill out this template?

holyaustin commented 1 year ago

Hi,

How are you doing today? From your reply, are you saying that the microgrant is to be used to kickstart a portion of the project? If that is true, what happens next? As you likely pointed out, it is a huge project and I aim at hiring other developers to help out with the idea because I cannot do it all alone lol.

Well, let's see how it goes. Thanks as i am already preparing for Labweek 22.

Thanks

Augustine

Hi @holyaustin we would like you to use the microgrant as a way to test out your idea. We weren't able to fully understand your idea and could not award you the budget that you requested. We think that if you are able to refine your idea and use this microgrant as a first step to this idea and focus on 1 of the 3 elements in your development roadmap, we highly encourage you to reapply for our next grants round!

holyaustin commented 1 year ago

Hi Orin,

Probably, I might not have presented the idea the way you guys wanted it but if I can know the areas that you guys are not comfortable with, I could refine those areas.

I am not comfortable reapplying to the microgrant.  If you can spare some time, can we talk about it more in detail in a chat or a call?

thanks.
