We want plausibly exogenous variation in whether a country is a friend or client. Two avenues:
(1) accidental deaths followed by the succession of a more hostile/friendly head of state toward the US. Wiki has a list of heads of state that died while in office, so next step is to figure out who of these were superseded by a head of state with a different attitude toward the US.
(2) Close elections that didn't have a predictable outcome and where the winner has a different attitude toward the US than the incumbent
We are particularly interested in identifying instances where a country changes category.
First idea: Russia moves from enemy to client with the election of Jeltsin.
(1) Is this a correct categorization? (2) If so, we would need to argue that it is.
