The drag & drop .app approach is nice for utter novices.
But any at least somewhat serious user will want to access the software from command line, which at the very least require putting it into PATH.
Perhaps for those people, offering a .pkg installer would be a nicer alternative. Doing that in a scripted way shouldn't be that hard. Some relevant links:
