Please post the log of the miner.

I've had the same issue the past several of days after working beautifully for 4 months. I haven't made any changes (not even Windows or Driver Updates.)

Win10, AMD vega 56, NVIDIA 1070, XMR-STAK version from 4/2/2018 (has worked for 4 months) and the most recent version.

I've tried on two different pools with same results. I've reset virtual memory Ran Chkdsk /r Tried disabling nvidia and AMD cards Tried running with and without hash rate monitor Tried tweaking card clockings in every way possible Tried intensity tweaks and worksize tweaks for AMD Tried bfactor and thread tweaks for NVIDIA

I've attached the log from the past day:

xmr-stak_log.txt

Here are the settings:

pools.txt

config.txt

nvidia.txt

amd.txt

cpu.txt

Similar crashes in other apps, this is probably not something that can be fixed in code, revert to 1703 (or Win7, the last Windows worth using) or await someone at Microsoft fixing their bad updates or bad new ideas (18xx are all garbage).

Unless you can find some other working solution to random crashes in everything Win10 18xx from this list of complaints - but for the tens of them I looked at everyone reverted and there were no other known fixes.

Also very impossible to debug due to completely random nature that doesn't seem to line up with any triggers/causes other than "windows gonna windoze"

This was working great for 4 months and no updates have occurred. Last update was 5/2018.

Spudz76 commented 6 years ago

Yeah and half a million users probably have had zero issues too.

Luck.

I have two other miners on Win 10 with updates that work fine. I tried to go with Ubuntu but every single update crashed my system badly. Sometimes couldn't even boot properly afterwards. If you have any free alternatives, I'm all ears.

In general Ubuntu 16 with kernel 4.4.0 and whatever driver works on 4.4.0 are what I found to work best. No Xorg shell not even a window manager, all console, with just enough Xorg to launch a virtual 640x480 Xserver in the background to poke the GPU clocks and such without wasting vram or worrying about drawing actual graphics anywhere (headless). If nvidia and amd had a true console only method of controlling their GPUs then I would not even have a crumb of Xorg on there.

Also of note, Ubuntu Installers are not versioned like normal. If you use a 16.04.5 install image you will get the 4.4.0 series kernel, but if you "grab the newest" like normal you'll get like 4.12 or something and it's sort of a tough hack to force it back to 4.4.0. So select the installer version based on what kernel you want and it will never update to stuff you don't want. I was always confused as to why they even left the "deprecated" 16.xx images available but that all makes sense now - they are actual different realities / timelines.

I do think you could try an older nvidia driver on your current Win10 setups, use like 387.xx or 391.xx but no newer. That will provide CUDA 8.0 (best) or CUDA 9.1 (also fine) which I have had much better luck with.

I stopped running miners on my gaming rig ever since CUDA 9.2 made it into the drivers, it seems buggy for mining.

UBUNTU-based mining OS Hive is free up to three rigs. It use to upgrade xmr-stak versions really fast after release. In August it featured good automatic temperature control script and so can be no-brainer choice for mining different monero forks.
