POROUS_VOLUME_FRACTION #10714

Hi.

I just completed two simulations that were exactly the same, exact that the POROUS_VOLUME_FRACTION differd from 0% to a 100%, yet i didnt notice any change in the thermocouples above the material. When the graphs were ploted in excel.

How come the POROUS_VOLUME_FRACTION dosn't effect the movement of hot fire gases through the material?

The following input was used for the material.

You have set DRAG_LAW='SPHERE'. This does not invoke the porous media model; DRAG_LAW='POROUS MEDIA' does. The POROUS_VOLUME_FRACTION units are not percent, this should be a fraction from 0 to 1. See the discussion and example in Section 17.4.8.

Since you have not attached a complete input file, I cannot tell if you have properly defined the &INIT for the particles. That could also be incorrect.

Try fixing the issues I noted and report back if you are still having problems (in which case attaching a full simple input file would be helpful).

What is the issue you have with this input file? Your original issue was a problem with porous media; however, you have defined the particle class 'skum' as being porous media in this input but you have not placed any of these particles in the domain. Are you reporting a new issue with the particle class PB_partikel?

Hello, Sorry for the mistake. I have now corrected the code and rerun the simulations. To repeat, the scenario I’m trying to simulate is smoke and heat transport from a battery fire (red arrow below), through a fixed granular media between the battery and the top of the steel box (area indicated with yellow arrow below, this area is also bolded in the code below), to for example a TC on the outside of a steel box. Of course the smoke doesn’t penetrate the steel box but it is the temperature on the outside of the steel box, measured with TC3, which is important. As can be seen in the code I have filled the steel box with several zones with granular media. But the main point I think is the yellow zone that should act as a porous media between the battery and the top of the steel box. image

As can be seen in the graphs a change in the conductivity affects the results, as expected. But it can also be seen that a change in porosity does not affect the results, which is very unexpected, I think. Have I misunderstood something about the porosity?

Try removing the MASS_PER_VOLUME. This is not in the example in the User's Guide. You are specifying twice the mass to place in the volume: once by defining the porous volume fraction and a second time by giving MASS_PER_VOLUME.

As a note, you defined your particles as a sphere with an 0.5 mm outer layer of PB around a 5 mm radius void space. The MATL PB has a density of 450 kg/m3 making the effective density of a single spherical particle ~112 kg/m3. For a sphere, the maximum close packing volume fraction is ~64 %. Therefore, the maximum mass that physically makes sense to specify as a MASS_PER_VOLUME would be ~72 kg/m3.

I tried removing the MASS_PER_VOLUME parameter for the &INIT (bolded in previous post) and did a rerun of the simulations. I still get the same temperature measurments for the "base"-simulation and the "lower porosity"-simulation.

Any other idea on why there's no difference between them?

POROUS MEDIA is rarely used, as far as I can tell. If you believe that there is something wrong with the algorithm, create a very simple test case for which there is a known solution. That will enable us to better diagnose a problem. To just say that a particular property did not make a big difference does not tell us if there is something really wrong.
