I'll take a look at it.

I've reproduced the problem.

open up the 3d smoke dialog box and do a couple of things 1) change albedo from 0.3
to 0.0 are columns obscured correctly?

Should albedo matter (unless the albedo is so low that no light is reflected)? As long
as a reasonable fraction of the light hitting a column is being reflected, seeing or
not seeing the column should just be dependent on absorbing through the smoke.

from a physics standpoint I think you are right. I think there is problem with how
I am treating the albedo term in smokeview. When I set albedo to 0.0 the columns
disappear as I think they are supposed to, I'm trying to verify that I am looking in
the right place. Then I will work on getting columns to disappear properly for any
albedo.

does beam_detector.fds look ok now in the latest smokeview?

It does. I can barely see the fifth column. Thanks.
