Wayland permission persistence problem has been fixed upstream #108

Open brlin-tw opened 1 year ago

The patch(https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/commit/c8274173f7d127f1d7e39e8b5bcaf7f0ee751f48) has been released since xdg-desktop-portal 1.15.0, and the problem should be mitigated for distros that ships them(e.g. Ubuntu 22.10).

We should probably suggest users to check their xdg-desktop-portal component versions.

Thank you for your considerate and kind post.

Well, users are users, they rarely read documentation and manuals. We already have put the info about the reason of the permissions in many places and yet we frequently receive "bug reports" 🤦🏼. Therefore, if we ask them as you suggested, I don't think they would ever read such thing either. The reality is that there are two type of Gnome users: those who have the updated version of xdg-desktop-portal and those who don't. Those who have it will stop complaining and wasting developers' time on bogus bug reports, and those who don't have the updated version will keep filing those.

I will pin this to the issues, but history have shown us that users don't even check the pinned issues. If you have any suggestions on how/where such news can be broadcasted, I'm all ears.

Tbh, this feels like a lost cause. At some point to me it felt like dropping Gnome support is much more feasible than trying to explain to Gnome users over and over to RTFM. This has already caused developer burn-out. There is a high chance I'm next

On second thought, I will keep this issue open to be able to collect ideas on how we can "educate" users about such thing. Perhaps someone can potentially come up with a brilliant idea. Thanks again.
