xdg-portal filepicker already allows the user to choose files, without sharing entire directories to the sandbox.
the appindicator works fine without XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
wayland+fallback-x11 works for both wayland and x11 and it's what GNOME devs suggest
