This game is an interesting one and is very "meta" you could say. It's a puzzle game, and does the following as part of the "meta" experience :
reads your OS username as part of the experience, it will call you by that name, and you can change it later, but it's part of the "meta" of the game
puts text files and executables in user documents folder as hints how to solve puzzles. the executable communicates with the game when the game is running.
the game changes desktop wallpaper/background to give hints on solving puzzles
for the changing wallpapers part, would xdg-run/dconf fileystem override work?
Does this issue reproduce with native Steam
Have not tested as the game won't run unless in flatpak, also after replacing some libs in the game. But i've heard it supposedly works on GNOME, KDE, XFCE and such
