This version does not work because it places the fonts.conf into /app/etc/fonts, where the sandboxed fontconfig does not find it (it only looks in /etc/fonts within the sandbox and in ~/.var/app/eu.betterbird.Betterbird/config/fontconfig).

If it is possible to add fonts.conf in /etc/fonts, that would be the easiest way to ship the workaround. Question has been asked in the Flathub discourse.
