Various cleanup to prep merge for fiber inheritance #30

Handling some of the annoying requests I made that are more my baggage in #29

@cedelmaier This passed tests locally, so it should be passing. Take a look and smash that merge button

@blackwer it looks good to me. I'm going to create some more unit tests to flesh everything out, and make some simple regression tests, to make sure everything is working okay in the near future.
