Instead of experimental true/false, swap in a project configuration option for "visibility". Options include:

"public" - fully visible, always listed in the left panel ("published"?)
"unlisted" - can only be accessed with a direct link, never listed in the left panel (show a marker for this as well, maybe something like < />)
"dev" - only show in development, not when published
"experimental" - only shown when "Enable Experiments" is selected (from settings / settings panel)
