We could do with a documented way of running from checked-out sources for
Windows (and indeed other operating systems)

The README file has basic information about this and refers to other stuff. We 
should
avoid duplicating this kind of thing in different places, since it then becomes
problematic to maintain. Do you think this information should live somewhere 
else, or
is having it in the README ok?
